The Art of Sound

Summer Brass Institute. It lasted 10 days. Some really good players (a lot better than I am) Some really intense music (that I tried my best to play well) and an overall positive experience, I think. I had a lesson with Mark Inouye, the principal trumpet of the San Francisco Symphony, and David Burkhart. They both teach at the Conservatory, where I want to go to graduate school. The lesson with Mark was less than spectacular (because of me, of course) but the lesson with Dave was really good. I have new focus now, I think. Figuratively and literally: I'm blowing into my mouthpiece in an entirely different way....haha.
I met some amazing people and confirmed my suspicion that, yes, brass musicians are all awkward people. Lovably so, of course. There were so many people there wearing cargo pants, polos and running shorts. So much privilege and opportunity. The facility was on a high school campus that costs literally 8 times as much to attend as my university. Crazy...
If I hadn't had to commute every day, I think I could have gotten a lot more out of it. Oh well, next year I know what I'm going to do.
